Massage
This is the kneading of soft tissues. It can be gentle or at times can work in to the deeper tissues. It has a number of beneficial effects including stimulating circulation, relaxing tight muscles, promoting healing, aligning collagen and increasing movement of an injured part.
Exercises
The exercises you will do have been designed especially for you. They may be for stretching tight muscles, improving range of movement, improving balance and joint stability (proprioception), improving posture, general and sports specific conditioning. Exercises aim to prevent a reoccurrence of your injury and rehabilitate you to the level required to meet your goals.
Pre & Postnatal Exercise Advice
During pregnancy and childbirth the important core stability muscles get stretched and/or cut & do not automatically bounce back into action afterwards. Weakness of these muscles leads to many of the problems that women suffer from weeks, months or years on from the birth of their child (ren) including: back & neck pain, pelvic instability, incontinence & prolapse not to mention a flabby tummy! A corrective exercise programme can help ease the pain and regain your body back.
Spinal manipulation
Manipulation is when a specific joint is carefully taken to the tightest point in its range then quickly gapped a little further into the appropriate direction. A ‘click’ or ‘pop’ is usually heard indicating that the joint surfaces have separated releasing a tiny bubble of gas. There is often immediate relief of pain or an increase in range of movement.
Posture Muscle balance & Biomechanics
Poor posture and repetitive activities can result is some muscles getting long and weak and some muscles getting tight and strong. This causes faulty biomechanics and places abnormal stresses across a joint or body part. The end result is often pain and injury. Identifying these factors leads to the development of a corrective exercise program.
Fitting of Formthotics for common foot faults
Many lower back and leg injuries can be a result of an altered foot position eg pronated or ‘flat feet’. This can often be easily corrected with the correct fitting of “Formthotic” insoles.
Joint mobilisation
This is the movement of a joint within its normal range of motion. It can involve traction or stretching and aims to increase range of movement at the joint and relieve pain
Specific training programmes for Sport
In order to return you safely back to your sport after an injury we will design a programme of higher level exercises that will condition your body and the injured area to the demands that will be required of it. In many cases, through correction of any underlying biomechanical faults and muscle imbalances you should be able to perform at a higher level than before!
Fitting of Braces
Braces are used to reduce the stress around a joint or body part. When fitted correctly they can be useful in low back pain, post-fracture or after severe ligament injuries.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used for healing by the Chinese for over 6000 years. They believe that a person’s well-being is a result of a balance between Yin and Yang energies within the body and that inserting needles into the appropriate points in the body will help restore that balance hence reducing pain and swelling.
Post- Surgical Rehabilitation
Body parts are often very stiff after surgery and muscles very weak. This does not often correct itself without intervention. It is essential to get the appropriate treatment and exercises after surgery in order to regain full function.
Strapping / Taping for sport
Strapping tape applied to an injured body part to give support and limit harmful movement. Tape can also be applied to enable you to return to you sport or activity without fear of re-injuring the affected part.
Electrotherapy including Ultrasound
Ultrasound is the application of sound waves which penetrate body tissues causing micro vibrations that, depending on the dosage, have a number of beneficial effects including enhancing the inflammatory response, promoting tissue healing, aiding strong & aligned collagen & scar remodelling, and reducing pain.
At Miramar Physiotherapy we treat your condition using a combination of the following options:
On your first visit we take time to discuss with you your health concerns and anticipated goals of treatment. We then undertake a detailed assessment of your injury/ problem in order to form an accurate diagnosis.
This means that treatment is appropriate, effective and specific to your needs.
At Miramar Physiotherapy we consider education to be a key component of managing your injury. Helping you to understand why the injury occurred will reduce the number of treatments you require and decrease the chance of the problem recurring.
If we feel that further investigation of your problem is required we will not hesitate to refer you on to the appropriate health professional. We can refer you directly for an x-ray, ultrasound scan or to a Specialist.
